Coastal Signs is pleased to present The Arrangement: of Houses & Buildings, Birth, Death, Money, Schools, Dentists, Birth Control, Work, Air, Remedies, and so on... a solo exhibition by Ruth Buchanan. The Arrangement... comprises a constellation of Buchanan’s work spanning the last ten years. The exhibition includes drawing, collage, a large-scale banner, wall paintings and vinyls, and a selection of textile works, some of which were developed with the artist’s children.

As the title (borrowed from a chapter of prose by Bernadette Mayer) suggests, Buchanan’s new exhibition is as complex as a life is. Both dense and transient, the collection of work in The Arrangement... suggests diaphonous boundaries between art-making and domestic life, and between the abstract and the concrete.

Ruth Buchanan (b. 1980, Ngāmotu New Plymouth) is an artist and uri of Taranaki mounga who lives in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. She works across exhibition making, writing, design, and teaching. She has realised significant exhibitions and commissioned works with Govett Brewster Art Gallery, Ngāmotu New Plymouth; Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart; The New Commissioners/Neue Aufftrageber, M ̈ochengladbach; Te Pataka Toi Adam Art Gallery, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington; Badischer Kunsterverin, Karlrsuhe; Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Art Gallery; MASP, Sao Paolo; Gwangju Biennale (8); Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Kunsthaus Bregenz; If I can’t Dance..., Amsterdam; Tate Modern, London; and The Showroom, London. In 2018 she was awarded the Walters Prize by international judge Adriano Pedrosa.

Ruth is currently Kaitohu Director at Artspace Aotearoa. Her work is included in the collections of Govett Brewster Art Gallery, Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, Toi o Tamaki Auckland Art Gallery, MASP, Christchurch Art Gallery, Victoria University, and others. The Arrangement... is Ruth’s first solo exhibition at Coastal Signs, preceded by two group exhibitions: Winter Skies (2023) and Celebration? Real life (2022).
